Wirepas
Component
Hardware-agnostic NR+ mesh-networking software for massive industrial IoT - 20M+ devices, including a single mesh of over a million smart meters.
Wirepas (Tampere, Finland; founded 2010 as a Tampere University spin-off) sells hardware-agnostic mesh-networking software for massive industrial IoT. Its Wirepas Platform lets millions of devices form self-healing, decentralised multi-hop networks - no base stations and no cellular subscription - so one network can cover a factory, building, city or metering estate at low cost and low power. The stack is based on the NR+ non-cellular 5G standard, so it runs on standard silicon and interoperates across vendors. The company reports more than 20 million devices running it, including a mesh of over one million smart electricity meters, and licenses the software to module makers, OEMs and utilities (wirepas.com; EIB release, 2026-06-09).

Evidence boundary
Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.
What makes it defensible
Wirepas owns a standards-based (NR+) decentralised mesh routing stack that scales to a million nodes without infrastructure - software-only, so any module vendor or utility can deploy critical-infrastructure connectivity without a carrier.
Position in the stack: Software IP layer inside other people's radios: it licenses the protocol and routing stack to module makers and system integrators, capturing value per connected device rather than per network. Durable only if NR+ becomes the default massive-IoT standard instead of a proprietary alternative.
