Vulkam
Component
French deep-tech industrialising amorphous metals (Vulkalloys) into millimetre-scale precision parts for watchmaking, medical devices and aerospace.
Vulkam (Gières / Le Versoud, near Grenoble, France) industrialises amorphous metals - 'metallic glasses' it brands Vulkalloys - into millimetre-scale precision parts. Its alloys have a disordered atomic structure that the company says delivers hardness and abrasion resistance comparable to ceramics without brittleness, roughly three times the strength and double the flexibility of conventional metals, plus non-magnetic behaviour and high elasticity. Vulkam designs the alloy formulation, then forms micro-components for watchmaking and jewellery (escape wheels, springs, cases, screws), medical devices (vascular clips, implants) and aerospace, selling co-development plus volume production from a 3,000 m² plant in Isère (vulkam.com; Groupe SEB and Bpifrance releases, 2024-01-15).

Evidence boundary
Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.
What makes it defensible
The only European company with industrial-scale amorphous-metal part production - nine patents and 30 years of SIMaP/CNRS metallurgy behind a process that resists scaling past laboratory foils.
Position in the stack: Materials processor and parts supplier upstream of watch, medical-device and aerospace OEMs. Value sits in the alloy IP plus the forming process and the long qualification cycles, which is why a decade of R&D preceded the first plant and why few entrants can follow.
Who buys it
Founding team
Sébastien Gravier — Founder, President and CEO — Graduate of École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay, mechanical engineer and doctor of metallurgy; spent 10 years of R&D at SIMaP before founding Vulkam in 2017.
Alexis Lenain — Co-founder — Doctor of metallurgy; co-founded Vulkam to industrialise the SIMaP amorphous-metal research.
