Vulcan Elements
Bottleneck owner
U.S. sintered NdFeB rare-earth magnet manufacturer - producing at Research Triangle Park and building a 1.1M sq ft Benson, NC plant.
Vulcan Elements (Durham / Research Triangle Park, NC; founded 2023) manufactures sintered NdFeB rare earth magnets for defense and commercial hardware - drones, semiconductor fabrication equipment, hard-disk drives, robotics, automotive and munitions. It runs powder-metallurgy processing (strip casting, hydrogen decrepitation, milling, pressing, sintering) on materials and equipment sourced from the U.S. and allied countries, and has produced magnets at its Research Triangle Park plant since March 2025. A 1.1 million sq ft facility in Benson, North Carolina - which the company describes as the largest rare earth magnet plant in the Western world - is under construction to scale output toward thousands of tonnes per year (vulcanelements.com; News & Observer and Defense News, 2025-08).

Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.
What makes it defensible
Domestic sintered-magnet capacity is the choke point - Vulcan is one of only a handful of Western firms actually shipping NdFeB magnets, with allied-sourced inputs and DoD contracts that give it a demand floor Chinese export controls cannot easily undercut.
Position in the stack: Upstream materials manufacturer converting rare-earth oxide into finished magnets that OEMs and primes must buy because the alternative is Chinese supply. The position is defended by permitting, process know-how and customer qualification cycles rather than by ore ownership - Vulcan does not mine.
