Ship-production automation stack: a CAD-to-plan-to-robot-motion software layer (Monolith) sitting on top of modular robotic fabrication cells and laser-welded precision structural panel kits, sold to shipyards and vessel primes as deployable production capacity. · United States
Austin-based startup building AI-planned robotic fabrication cells and precision structural steel panel kits to automate ship panel assembly for U.S. commercial and naval shipyards.
Two coupled products. (1) Deployable modular robotic cells that perform primary stiffening, micropanel and T-beam fabrication, material handling and welding in a smaller footprint than traditional shipyard automation, built around standard industrial robots (FANUC) and phased-array laser welding claimed to enable single-pass welding of thick structural steel with minimal distortion. (2) Precision structural panel kits — robotically fabricated, laser-cut, leveled steel components trucked to customer facilities ready for integration, to cut manual fit-up. Both are driven by Monolith, Valstad's in-house software stack that ingests a 3D CAD model and generates the full build sequence (cuts, welds, robot motions, inspection points) and can replan on the fly.

What makes it defensible
Valstad argues the binding constraint on U.S. shipbuilding is labor productivity, not steel price or wage rates: U.S. yards are roughly 4-5x less productive per compensated gross ton than South Korean yards, about 80% of shipyard welding is still manual, the average U.S. welder is 55, and the industry faces a projected shortfall of 200,000-250,000 shipbuilding workers over the next decade. Its claim is that the real gap is the 'connective tissue' between process steps — production planning, sequencing, positioning and quality verification from CAD model to finished structure — and that a flexible robotic cell plus automated planning (rather than a better welding robot alone) is what raises output without adding welders.
Position in the stack: Tier-1 manufacturing-automation supplier to the maritime industrial base: sells robotic fabrication cells and structural panel kits, plus the planning software that drives them, to shipyards, vessel owners/primes and autonomous-vessel builders. Sits between industrial robot/welding/laser hardware vendors and shipyards — e.g. supplying Blue Water Autonomy's Liberty Class production model alongside Conrad Shipyard (hull build), Tulip (MES), Caterpillar Defense (engines) and Precise Power Systems (engine modules). Longer term it also intends to own and operate its own automated shipyard.
