Shadow Robot Company
Component
London maker of the Shadow Dexterous Hand — the long-standing anthropomorphic hand and teleoperation platform behind OpenAI's Dactyl work.
The Shadow Robot Company designs and builds anthropomorphic dexterous hands and teleoperation systems — the reference hardware for the hardest part of humanoid manipulation. Its Shadow Dexterous Hand replicates human hand kinematics (roughly 24 joints/movements) with tendon-driven actuation and over a hundred sensors, and was the hand behind OpenAI's Dactyl in-hand manipulation research. The current line includes the DEX-EE hand, built for reinforcement-learning work, plus tactile fingertip sensors, teleoperation rigs and McKibben-style 'air muscles'. Customers are research labs, industrial R&D groups and operators in hazardous environments who need human-like grasping and force control rather than a two-finger gripper. The company also participates in UK/EU robotics consortia, including assistive-living and nuclear-decommissioning work.

Evidence boundary
Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.
What makes it defensible
Two decades of anthropomorphic hand kinematics, tendon actuation and tactile sensing — the hardest sub-assembly of a humanoid, with the reference platform the research world already trains on.
Position in the stack: Component/end-effector layer: the hand and teleoperation hardware that humanoid OEMs and manipulation labs buy rather than build, which is where dexterity and force control are won or lost.
Who buys it
Named customers: Google DeepMind, NASA, Sellafield Ltd, Ocado Technology, GSK, Siemens, MIT
Founding team
Richard Greenhill — Founder — London photojournalist who convened the Shadow Robot Project in 1987 and incorporated the company in 1997; still associated with the firm
Rich Walker — Managing Director / Director — Joined the project as a teenager in the late 1980s, wrote its early software, and has led the company as MD for well over a decade
