Niron Magnetics
Bottleneck owner
University of Minnesota spin-out commercialising iron nitride permanent magnets that contain no rare earths.
Niron Magnetics manufactures permanent magnets from iron nitride instead of rare earths. Iron and nitrogen are abundant and cheap; the hard part is stabilising the magnetic phase, which is the process Niron has patented and now runs in a Minneapolis commercial pilot plant that samples customers today. The Clean Earth Magnet targets the motor and generator market — EV traction, wind, industrial drives, audio, data-centre fans — where rare-earth supply concentration and price volatility bind design choices. The scale-up plan is explicit: a 1,500 t/yr plant in Sartell, Minnesota with ground broken, and a 10,000 t/yr plant in site selection. It does not yet sell at volume; it sells qualification and sampling.

Evidence boundary
Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.
What makes it defensible
Iron nitride phase-stability process know-how: the material is abundant, the manufacturable recipe is not, and Niron holds the patent estate plus the only pilot line producing it to spec.
Position in the stack: Component and supply-chain bottleneck (pa-3): every downstream motor and generator design depends on magnet supply, so a non-China, non-rare-earth magnet source is a supply position rather than a product feature.
Who buys it
Founding team
Jian-Ping Wang — Founder, Chief Scientific Officer & Board Member — University of Minnesota professor whose ARPA-E-funded iron nitride research produced the 2014 spin-out; served as the company's first CTO.
Jonathan Rowntree — CEO (since January 2023) — Chemical engineer with nearly 30 years scaling plants and operations at Henkel and Rogers Corp; took over from the founding CEO to drive commercial scale-up.
