Metalenz
Component
Fabless meta-optics company shipping semiconductor-made lenses and polarization sensing into phones.
Metalenz is a fabless semiconductor optics company that commercializes metasurface (metalens) optics — planar lenses patterned in a semiconductor process instead of stacked glass. Products include first-generation meta-optics for 3D/ToF sensing, Polar ID (polarization-based face authentication, including an under-display variant) and Polar 3D for on-device relightable imaging. The company launched meta-optics into consumer devices in 2022 via STMicroelectronics, later added a UMC manufacturing path, and in 2025 signed a new ST license to accelerate adoption. Company-reported in-market volume: 140 million first-generation units by 2025 and 300 million by 2026. Markets listed: consumer electronics, smart robotics and automotive. Built on Capasso-lab IP from Harvard with an exclusive license.

Evidence boundary
Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.
What makes it defensible
The first company to put semiconductor metasurface optics into high-volume consumer devices — a planar optic that replaces multi-element camera modules.
Position in the stack: Fabless optics IP and design house sitting on foundry partners (ST, UMC) and selling into smartphone and sensing module makers. Hard to copy because of Harvard-origin IP, high-volume process qualification and OEM design-ins.
Who buys it
Named customers: STMicroelectronics (manufacturing partner)
Founding team
Rob Devlin — Co-founder and CEO — Joint BS/MS in EE and materials science at Drexel; PhD in applied physics at Harvard in Federico Capasso's lab; author on high-efficiency visible metasurfaces, including work selected as a Science cover and a 2016 Science breakthrough
Federico Capasso — Co-founder — Harvard applied physicist whose lab originated the metalens IP; Metalenz was founded in 2016 with an exclusive license to Harvard metasurface patents
