Emberion

Component

emberion.com

Finnish colloidal-quantum-dot SWIR sensor and camera maker — a Nokia spin-out acquired by Exosens in 2026.

Emberion designs and manufactures short-wave infrared sensors and cameras built on colloidal quantum dot photodetectors rather than the epitaxial InGaAs or cooled detector stacks that dominate SWIR. Its VS20 camera and sensor line extends machine vision well beyond visible light — across a broad wavelength range up to about 5,000 nm — for spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging, enhanced vision and night vision, thermography, semiconductor inspection and drone-based defence and surveillance. The pitch is cost: quantum dots are deposited from solution onto Emberion's own readout ICs, which the company argues puts SWIR sensitivity at a fraction of incumbent sensor cost. Emberion was created in 2016 from Nokia research and joined the Exosens group in April 2026.

Evidence boundary

Original analysis and independent corroboration remain under development. Commercial scale and durable technical advantage remain under review.

Colloidal quantum-dot SWIR detectors integrated on graphene transducers, with in-house CMOS read-out design - an end-to-end sensor stack that avoids the epitaxial InGaAs and cooled-detector cost base.

Component layer: designs both the read-out IC (Espoo) and the quantum-dot deposition process (Cambridge), then builds cameras on top - one of few players owning chip through camera, which is what makes the cost position hard to copy.

Industrial Automation — OEMs

Tapani Ryhanen — Co-founder & CTO — Before establishing Emberion he led Nokia's research and development of sensor and material technologies; Emberion spun out of Nokia Technologies in 2016.
