The Digital Trust thesis begins with a simple constraint: digital activity creates durable economic value only when institutions can determine who or what is acting, what that actor is allowed to do, whether the underlying systems are behaving normally and how those decisions can be proved later. That requirement is expanding as companies distribute work across cloud services, remote employees, contractors, machine identities, application programming interfaces and autonomous software. Each new connection increases the number of decisions that must be authenticated, observed and governed.
Traditional cybersecurity was often organized around a perimeter. Modern operations have no single perimeter. A user may move between a corporate device, a software-as-a-service application and a public cloud workload while automated services exchange credentials in the background. NIST describes zero trust as a shift away from implicit trust based on network location toward protecting resources through explicit, continuously evaluated decisions.
