# Product / how it works
Capacity bottleneck, not differentiated product: declining copper ore grades (~1%→~0.5% over 20 years) and 10–15-year greenfield mine lead times concentrate value in large-scale mining/refining capacity-holders.
BHP is a price taker in bulk commodities. It cannot raise the iron ore price above the global index without losing sales. Its economic “pricing power” comes from:
- Being in the lowest quartile of the cost curve, which supports volume through the cycle.
- Product quality premiums and penalties around grade and impurities.
- Long-life reserves and optionality to defer high-cost capacity.
- Counterparty diversification and index-linked formulas.
If BHP tried to charge a fixed premium above the market, customers could switch to Rio Tinto, Vale, or spot cargoes. Therefore, traditional pricing power is low; cost-position power is high.

# Who they sell to
- Commodity price cyclicality — copper/aluminum price is the dominant P&L driver.
- Geographic concentration — Chile/Peru/DRC supply concentration is a geopolitical risk.
- Aluminum substitution — accelerating substitution in motors/cables weakens copper demand.
- Segment-level copper/aluminum revenue split and expansion capex (SEC 10-K).
- Grade trajectory and reserve life at flagship operations.
- Exposure to data-center/EV/grid demand vs. traditional construction.
